Lymph nodes can also become enlarged if cancer cells lodge in them. Lymphedema occurs when the lymph vessels are not able to adequately drain lymph fluid, usually from an arm or leg. Another time when they can be felt is when you have an infection, (for example, a sore throat or an ear infection which can make the neck lymph nodes enlarged, painful and tender as these are the nearest lymph nodes to the site of infection). However, sometimes they can be felt in slim people as smooth pea-sized lumps, usually in the groin. I had a bunch of ultrasounds done, one CT scan for my neck then after a year and a half. I saw an ENT, 2 hematologists (one of which is well known and a director of a research center), an immunologist, and an oncology surgeon. Rubella, also called German measles, is a viral condition that can cause swelling of the glands in the head and neck. I have a lymph node in my neck and behind my head for 7 years or so since I discovered them. Viral infections can also sometimes cause swollen occipital lymph nodes. Since the lymph nodes work to help the dogs immune system, it is common to see systemic symptoms. It occurs in systemic pathologies, such as infectious diseases and sepsis. Generalized: when lymph nodes throughout the body are affected. Lymph nodes are usually too small to feel. Other symptoms will include yellow crusts on the scalp, hair loss, and dandruff ( scalp itchiness ). We most commonly notice them on the lymph nodes of the neck. Lymph nodes can only be felt in certain areas of the body (see Figure 1): The lymph nodes filter out harmful organisms and abnormal cells before the lymph reaches the blood stream. They are found at intervals along the lymphatic vessels like ‘beads on a string’. Move your first 3 fingers to the crease where your thigh meets your pelvis. Lymph nodes (‘glands’) are small ‘bean-shaped’ nodules that contain millions of infection fighting lymphocyte cells. Feel for the inguinal lymph nodes in your groin. It drains into lymphatic vessels then larger lymphatic vessels called ducts in the neck before joining the blood stream near the heart (see Figure 1). Lymph fluid bathes the cells of the skin and internal organs.
